In Asia alone, studies have shown that some $390 billion are spent annually for healthcare. Medical tourism is likely to be the next major foreign exchange earner for India as an increasing number of patients, unwilling to accept long queues and high costs in the western countries would be traveling to India. The Government has introduced various policy measures to further encourage medical tourism. We firmly feel that tripartite synergy between Government, Hospitals and tour operators would do wonders in attracting foreign patients to India. Medical tourism embraces a wide umbrella of related fields, from hotels and resorts to hospitals and clinics, from spas and alternative medicine to travel agencies. There is also the pharmaceutical industry at the periphery, and the health care professionals at the very core of the medical tourism. Medical tourism can indeed pay rich dividends for India, says a joint study conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-McKinsey, consulting firm, conducted in April. The study estimated that medical tourism can generate Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 crore additional revenue for tertiary hospitals by 2012.
