Taiwans medical device industry has seen 20 to 30% growth rate in recent years; it even enjoyed double-digit growth amidst global financial crisis in 1999-2000. Taiwan alone manufactured medical devices worth up to NT$50 billion (US$ 1.55 billion) in 2005, of which around NT$40 billion (US$ 1.24 billion) was exported throughout the world.

  Taiwan s edge in the medical industry is its outstanding lead in IT which has constantly strengthened design and quality standard to let it dazzle the international market. Taiwan this year announced that it has created the first mass spectrometer in the world that can measure the mass of cells and viruses. A huge leap forward that will help doctors instantly identify the real pathogen of epidemics and battle cancers and Escherichia coli. Meanwhile, Taiwan rules the hospital wards with its low costing efficient wheel chairs and powered mobile aids. It is estimated that Taiwanese manufacturers supply up to 70% of the global market for powered mobility aids.
